We would recommend having a read of our previous article if you have not already done so, as it explains why active VRM cooling is necessary for the XPS Unfortunately, it turns out that Dell is equipping its latest flagship multimedia laptop with different heatsinks depending on the version that you buy. The information comes courtesy of several Reddit threads, so we should stress that we cannot yet confirm the information.

However, the pictures below are of XPS 15 laptops, and the claims have been corroborated by numerous reported owners, so this seems more than just speculative claims. Currently, it appears that only the Core iHK powered model has the same heatsink as in the XPS 15 service manual. As we covered in our previous articles, insufficient VRM cooling can and does lead to thermal throttling, as many people with the XPS 15 will attest.

Disappointing stuff, Dell; especially when there have been multiple reports of XPS 15 models suffering from FPS drops while gaming.

Dell XPS 15 9570 Thermal Throttling FIX ***HOW TO FIX TUTORIAL***

Alex Alderson - News Editor - aldersonaj. Prior to writing and translating for Notebookcheck, I worked for various companies including Apple and Neowin. Happy to chat on Twitter or Notebookchat. When I first powered it on and began to progress through the setup screen, the fan turned on. I hadn't even connected to the internet or opened any programs, yet the fan was still running at a noticeably audible and relatively frustrating level.

The fan continued to run even after I finished the setup and left the computer idle. I downloaded the recommended updates hoping the fan noise would be cured but it wasn't. I then exchanged the laptop for another of the same model and specs at the Microsoft Store, as a new laptop fresh out of the box shouldn't have such an issue.

However, the same problem persisted. As I'm writing this, I have 5 tabs of Microsoft Edge along with 2 tabs of Google Chrome open, yet the fan is still working double time.

I know this can't be normal, especially since this is supposed to be a top of the line machine. My MacBook Pro of a similar price is currently running 50 tabs of Google Chrome, 40 tabs of Safari, and 10 other applications, yet is completely silent.

I purchased the Dell XPS 15 because I read and was told it was the closest Windows compatible machine to a Mac in terms of power, reliability, and quality. However, the apparent discrepancy in performance is pretty egregious. The other post on this topic came to the conclusion that all Dell XPS 15's have loud fans by Dell's design but that just can't be right.

In addition, after doing a Google Search, I discovered that some people do have completely quiet machines. For those that have the fan issue, have you been able to solve it? If so, how? For those that have completely quiet machines, where did you purchase them? Since I've already gone through multiple machines from the Microsoft Store with the same issue, could this be a result of purchasing from them?

Any help or insight as to why the fans of the Dell XPS 15 are so loud and information on how to solve the problem would be greatly appreciated. Go to Solution. When you launch the app, it can take a while to open in my experience, over a minute but it is honestly useful enough to have come as "bloatware" with the product. You can check battery health and automatically lower the battery charge threshold overnight, for example. But we're here to talk about fan speed.

Head on over to Thermal Management, click "Quiet", and all your loud fan woes should be quelled. Set it to "Cool" or "Quiet"!I just bought a brand new XPS 15i7, 32gb RAM and gtx and also bought a caldigit ts3 plus docking station to be able to use thunderbolt to connect it up to all my peripherals. When I plug the XPS into the docking station but leave the lid closed, the fan gets extremely loud.

The laptop and docking station also get a bit warm. I'm not sure of what could be causing this. The only compatibility issue I know of is that the ts3 plus has a maximum output of 85W, while my XPS charger is W. Is this something fixable in configuration settings, or have I connected something wrong? Both devices are brand new, so It's not like I connected an older device to a newer one.

Go to Solution. Using any sort of Thunderbolt peripheral activates the system's internal Thunderbolt controller, which is normally kept powered completely off. As for the power issue, be aware that using an undersized power source can cause the system to throttle its performance to try to operate within the reduced power budget.

Since it happened it stayed above c while gaming constantly, but before this happened I was gaming fine staying under 90c but was still way hot.

So with this mod Im able to game under 80c and temps are more stable and not jumping all over the place.

Also not undervolted in anyway, using a cooling pad. My battery is at "best performance" and "ultra performance" in Dell's power management. Raven states this disables turbo boost, thus lowering clock speeds mine clocking out at 2. Thanks for that. Ill keep this thread updated as more info comes in for people to be aware of what this does. But theres seriously no harm in this right? I was unaware of the turbo boost, but dude So i really cant complain at this point.

Unless Dell has there own official solution in the future this will do for me. I could see that it would be easier to do this so you can change back and forth while running Windows. Browse Community. Reven 2 Iron. Ok you can do that but are you aware what it really does? And also its obvious why temps dropped down. It is connected to what i wrote earlier, no turbo means no additional power to cpu so no additional heat. Best way to make it cooler is UV. No other way at least until you need your warranty. There's no harm in doing it, and I've done for my 2-in-1 while waiting for the drivers and BIOS updates.

It's sad that Dell didn't learn anything from the problems on the previous XPS generation.

Just a question to all. Dell Support Resources.Problems I ran into while the machine was under heavy load e. Problem1 : After a few minutes, the CPU clock was reduced to the minimum clock speed of 0.

The system was now barely usable. After around 5 Minutes, everything went back to normal. Solution1 : After a long forensic work and forum reading, I managed to identify the " Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework " as the cuplrit. Uninstalling it did not go well it keeps coming back, no matter what you try It seems like some Intel Software updated the Thermal framework to the newest version, which renders your machine unusable.

You can prevent the newer faulty drivers from being installed e. The i9 of the XPS has a power limit of 56W permanently please correct me if I'm wrongor 78W short turbo boost period.

You cannot do a lot against the power limit throttling which is goodbut thermal throttling can be solved completely with this machine. Problem2 : CPU temps were not too bad out of the box. Temps are now going up much slower, even without thermal throttling at all.

The cpu frequency of the machine is now solely limited by the power limits of the VRMs. You can see that the package power is constantly hitting the 56W mark right top and the CPU frequency is extremely stable. Fans kicking in a lot later and not with such a heavy spin. I can even hear the crappy WD15 TB16 dock then ThrottleStop: Disable CPU turbo CPU power consumption and its induced high temps only obstruct the GPU from performing well In game: cap framerate to 60 fps, I play it with all settings to high and view distance to epic on constant 60 fps which is enough for me.

The machine power intake will never go far beyond W which is not a problem for the machine's thermals. Disclaimer: You have to know what you're doing! Repasting is not an easy task on a brand new machine! For ThrottleStop, there are many tutorials out there.

How to Fix Throttling on the Dell XPS 15 9570 / 9560

As mentioned in our detailed reviewthe XPS 15 with the Core iHQ processor as well as the with the iH update is prone to two types of throttling:. The first type of throttling is quite straightforward to all but the most uninitiated: the CPU and GPU have temperature limits to prevent damage.

Exceeding the temperature max C for CPU, 97C for GPU will cause an instantaneous shutdown—but you should never see temperatures anywhere near that as the components will throttle their performance long before they get to that point. The GPU will reduce its clocks to keep its temperature below 78C, and the CPU will dynamically reduce its turbo-clocks based on temperatures and power consumption.

The second type of throttling is also the result of heat, but because people generally look at CPU and GPU temperatures alone when benchmarking, it went undetected for a long time. Throttling occurs around 78C.

To get your XPS 15 to run at its maximum potential, we will need to solve both these problems. This can reduce the load wattage needed for the CPU by 10W easily. The link above explains how to use ThrottleStop and how to test for stability. The next step is dealing with the temperatures of the VRM head-on. Take another look at this picture:.

The mod is fairly straightforward: cut out small vertical strips from the thermal pad and place them on top of the MOSFETs above the heat spreaders. If you are using 1. Once you have stacked your little padded pillars over the MOSFETs and put the case bottom back on, you should be able to run any game or benchmark without VRM-induced throttling.
